The Earth we live on is ancient. Through the ages, we – we and our ancestors – have received nourishment and shelter, protection and vitality from Earth. We owe our lives to this magnificent home, which gives so generously and demands nothing from us. Yet its wellbeing is completely bound up with the attention and honour that we give to it.
From the Earth we learn about rhythm; we learn about letting go; we learn about trustworthiness, and we learn about relationship. We learn about the intelligence, the lawfulnesss, that streams through all of life, all living process. We learn about ourselves from this home of ours. In this vast, unbounded generosity of Earth-our-home, we learn about care, and about reciprocity. We learn about Life itself.
We also learn that the Earth carries memory. The footsteps of those who came before us, treading on this sacred Earth, are embedded in the soil. Our ancestors, and the ancestors of all of humanity. The Earth carries this memory across time and space, with the blood and pain of displacement, of dispossession, of disregard for the archetypal need to belong. The Earth also carries memory of the fulfilment of Belonging.
How can we find our rightful place, the place – inwardly and outwardly – where we belong? The place which holds us; the place where the reciprocity of care for our Home, and care for and acknowledgement of those who came before, enables us to find Home, to be at Home, in the presence of the largeness of Life.
