The inner family: working with inner parts in constellations
In “classical” family constellations we usually focus on intergenerational dynamics, which contribute to problems we experience in our lives. We look for and acknowledge those members of a family who have been excluded, to bring about healing and resolution. Acknowledgment and inclusion are the principles guiding constellation work.
The same principles apply when we work with different aspects of the personality within a person. Here the focus is on intra-psychic dynamics. Even if symptoms or difficulties have their roots in patterns that developed in previous generations it can be helpful to pay attention to the internal processes that maintain them – especially if other interventions have failed.
In our language we accommodate the concept of different parts of our personality. People speak of their inner child, the superego, the voice of the critical parent, the higher self, etc. At best these parts help us to function effectively in diverse settings, at worst there are parts of our personality, which “make” us act against what we really want and what is good for us. Our inner “saboteurs” can create havoc in our lives, and we try all sorts of things to control them, usually with little success. We are seldom inclined to listen to them and understand what they are trying to achieve. If we did, we would find astonishing solutions for seemingly unsolvable problems.
In inner parts work we are interested in how different – especially conflicted – parts relate to each other and how they communicate. Which parts need to be taken care of? How can we mobilise resourceful parts when dealing with difficulties like anxiety, inner conflict, intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and other behaviours that do not make sense to us?
Many therapeutic or coaching modalities work with inner parts (e.g. Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Voice Dialogue, to name only a few). In this experiential workshop we will work cover some theory, work with clients’ issues and explore different ways that trainees can incorporate inner parts work into their specific scope of practice.
Karin Huyssen is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Stellenbosch. She has been trained in systemic and psychodynamic therapy – and over the years added other modalities to her repertoire. She combines Family Constellations, Ego-State Therapy, Somatic Experiencing® in her work with inner parts. She has been involved in constellation work for many years and offers open workshops, training and supervision in this modality. Karin is a board member of SCASA (Systems Constellations Association of South Africa). She is presenting this model of working at national and international conferences and training seminars.
